I went for a drop of honey because I like that richer caramel note more than the usual sugar cube, but you can also just use a splash of the syrup from the cherries if that’s more tempting.
While I wouldn’t claim this is an authentic recipe, I would say it’s what you want in your cup when you’re in the mood for a drink that warms you from the inside out, is equal parts playful and sophisticated, and goes down (almost too) easy. Let me know if you try it at home!
NB: While I enjoyed lighting the orange essential oil sprays on fire for our viewing pleasure and for the gentle smoky note it imbues, you get a better punch of fresh orange zing if you spritz it right over top of the finished drink by giving the orange peel a good twist. You could do both.
Honeyed Old Fashioned
INGREDIENTS
Honey
Orange bitters
Angostura bitters
Bourbon
Brandied cherries
Orange peel
INSTRUCTIONS
To the bottom of a lowball glass, add up to a teaspoon of honey depending on how sweet you like it. Dissolve with a little splash of warm water. Add a few dashes of orange bitters and angostura bitters and swirl to combine.
Add ice to the cup and swirl, then add 2 oz bourbon of your choosing and one brandied cherry for garnish, a touch of candy sweetness, and good luck (why not).
Use a paring knife or peeler to skim just the brightest orange part of a fresh orange off in a 1" ribbon. Twist it over the drink to lend a light zing of citrus bite to finish the cocktail before dropping the orange peel into the drink and enjoying. You may also like to use a flame to lightly scorch the peel as garnish.
